THEY GAVE LIFE TO STONES
The grounds of the Mining Museum were given another dimension, namely art dimension, two years ago when Martin Kuchar, a sculptor from Ostrava (Czech republic), decided to organize meeting of sculptors called "Symposium" right here, in this nice secluded place of otherwise harsh Ostrava region.
Sculpture as well as mining, which used to rule here for many decades, is a very hard work that requires not only talent but also love. So we can say that it actually belongs here - below Landek hill, larded with black stone - coal.
1st International Sculpture Symposium, which originated with contribution of a samll Civic Society of sculpture symposium and many small and big sponsors, had its premiere in summer 2002. Title? LANDEK 02. Six sculptors came to Ostrava from Japan, Sweden, Germany, Poland and the Czech republic. Their works created in less then 4 weeks were greatly admired by symposium visitors. Te symposium was held under the patronage of Moravian-Silesian district commissioner Ing. Evzen Tosenovsky. At the end of the 1st symposium the organizers decided taht the symposium would become a tradition and would be held every two years in Ostrava.
Year 2003 came in very quickly and brought a lot of duties related to the arrangement of the 2nd symposium - biennial symposium. The duties included requests for financial grants, sponsors hunting and many other organizational tasks and also provision of many tons of stone for the works. Does it seem impossible? Yes it does, but when people are enthusiastic about their idea they manage to do even seemingly impossible things.
2nd symposium ws opened on August 14th 2004. The patronage was again assumed by the Moravian-silesian district commissioner Ing. evzen Tosenovsky and the four-member Civic Society was again supported by several understanding sponsors. Great thanks belong to them for preparing all necessary conditions.
This year largely young artists whose has been already launched came to Ostrava, namely: Bogdan Wajberg - a teacher at College of Fine Arts in Lodz (Poland), Patrik Kovacovsky - a teacher at College of Fine Arts in Bratislava (Slovakia), Emir G. Chávez - a sculptor and painter from Mexican Monterrey, Jiri Marek - a sculptor from Brno who studied under professor Vladimir Preclik, South Bohemian Tomas Franta - a skillful and already well-known sculptor from Jindrichuv Hradec and twenty years old Ivanka Havlickova - a student of South Bohemian University in Ceske Budejovice, and Klara Orosz - a Hungarian sculptor from Pecs. Moreover, Martin Kuchar - an organizer and chairman of the Civic Society for sculpture symposia, also joined group of new sculpture generation.
The Civic Society for sculpture symposium would like to thank for all help and support to those who took part in this great sculpture feast. We would also like to thank to media partners: Czech Radio Ostrava and the Moravian Silesian Daily and also to toher media of our region. We wish sculptors a lot of creative invention as well as great portion of good luck.
We are all looking forward to the next meeting. Symposium LANDEK 04 is over, let the 3rd symposium LANDEK 06 be successful.
